Iceland has picked Under the Tree to be its contender for the 2018 Oscars in the foreign-language category.
The drama from director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson focuses on a typical suburban dispute: two neighbors arguing over a tree in one of their backyards and the shadow it casts in the backyard of the other. But the spat soon spirals violently out of control.
Under the Tree premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Magnolia picked up North American rights to the movie.
Sigurdsson is a well-known figure on the art house scene. His first feature, Either Way, was remade in English by David Gordon Green as Prince Avalanche.
New Europe Film Sales is handling world sales on Under The Tree.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will announce the nominees for best foreign-language film on Jan. 23. The 90th Oscars ceremony takes place March 4.
