NewYork, March20:Canadian rapper Drake released his new album “More Life” consisting of 22-songs on Saturday. The album set new records within its first 24 hours. The album was not an Apple Music exclusive and made records both on Apple’s platform as well as Spotify.
Apple Music had 89.9 million streams during the first 24 hours of availability. This broke all the previous records for streams during the first 24 hours on Apple Music. The record was previously held by Drake’s last album, “Views.” Apple Music also outperformed Spotify by 68% which had 61.3 million streams on its first day of availability. The number is 28.6 million times less than that on Apple Music. But it did bested Spotify’s previous record held by Ed Sheeran which was streamed 56.7 million times in the first 24 hours of its availability.
This comes as a surprise considering the difference in subscribers between the two platforms. Apple Music has around 20 million subcribers while Spotify, on the other hand, recently revealed to have 100 million subscribers. Inspite of having five times the number of subscribers, Spotify lost to Apple Music Spotify by nearly 30 million streams.
Also Drake has been the highest streamed artist on Spotify in 2015 and 2016. His song One Dance was the most streamed song ever. Coming to the best song from his latest album was “Free Smoke” which took the top spot on Apple Music. “Portland” and “Passionfruit” were the next best tracks.
The album will be commercially release on CD and vinyl LP in the coming weeks.
